Silence is what makes the chair scary.
Most people are not afraid of pain. They are afraid of lying back, hearing a sound they cannot place, and having no idea what is being done to them.
So I narrate. I say what I am about to do before I do it, I say how long it will take, and I stop the moment a hand goes up. It is a small habit that changes the whole appointment.
I also see a lot of children, and a lot of adults who have not been to a dentist in a decade. Both groups get the same thing from me: no lecture about what they should have done, just a plan for what we do next.
